A long time ago, books were meticulously hand-copied from original manuscripts onto parchment paper, bound with marbled boards and linen threads, and owned by only the wealthy or by the bookbinders themselves.

With the invention of moveable type, it was possible for printers to print multiple copies of books with only a single bout of meticulous hand-setting, and over time, books became more and more accessible.

Time was that all bookstores were small, independent businesses with well-read booksellers selling shelves full of lovely books. Walking into one of these sacred spaces was an experience, not just a purchase.
